Obituary

Katie gave her last command, "I am ready to go". And so she did on October 11, 2016, after 93 years of a most wonderful life. Katie was one of nine siblings. Home was Toledo, Ohio. With her passing, she was united with her parents, six siblings, and devoted husband, Leroy. She has two remaining sisters, Barbara Banks and Betty Donnal.

Katie joined the Navy and served during WWII. Proud to be a WAVE, she was the second woman to be ranked chief. To her death, she celebrated her service time by being a member of the MWAN (Military Women Across the Nation). In the Navy, she met the love of her life Leroy Magee. They enjoyed 59 years of marriage. It was a true love story.

After the war, Katie was passionate about education. First as a student, then as an educator. Her students ranged from college students at the Art Institute to young special education students in the Kansas City Missouri School District. To the present, she belonged to the MRTA (Missouri Retired Teachers Association). Katie would boast that she had so many children that she loved and taught. Her love of helping young people will be living on in a scholarship fund she has directed to be established.

Katie was a faithful Catholic attended Cure of Ars Church. She was a proud Democrat looking forward to the coming election. She was smart, fun, and generous. She was a great sister and aunt to many. To Tommy Castellanos, she called son. The McCandless family embraced her presence in their lives. Katie will be so missed. We were so rewarded to have this great lady in our lives. Now united, Katie and Leroy forever together.

Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 17, at Cure of Ars Catholic Church, 9401 Mission Rd., Leawood, Kan. Visitation from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, at McGilley State Line Chapel, 12301 State Line Rd., Kansas City. Burial in Resurrection Cemetery, Lenexa, Kan.

May warm special memories brighten your heart. For I take with me the love we shared. - Katie
