Dede was born on April, 26, 1946 in Kansas City, Missouri to Dr. R. L. DeSoto and Rose DeSoto (Martinez). She attended Loretto Academy and received her Bachelor's in Education from Kansas University, and she always remained an avid Jayhawks fan. Upon graduation, she began her career as an elementary school teacher. She obtained her Master's and her Reading Specialist degrees from the University of Missouri - Kansas City. She taught for 35 years in the elementary and middle school setting as a reading teacher. She loved being a mom to her son and loved serving and teaching her students. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends. As part of her rich social life Dede liked dining out, volunteerism, and attending cultural events in the area. Most of all, Dede loved the Lord and her family dearly. She was outgoing, full of joy, and had a heart to serve those around her. Her bubbly personality, joy, and hospitality will be missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Phillip and Lucy DeSoto; and her late husband, Jim Shannahan. She is survived by her son, Scott Shannahan; and siblings, Ana Marie DeSoto (La Mesa, CA) and John DeSoto.
